Echoes of a Voice

                                                     Echoes of a Voice

                                                 Oh what an experience
I feel cheated of my blackness
                                                                                       I feel anger
   ENVY
almost hate for the white in me
I want to holler at my mother
                                                                she was doing her best
                                                                                          Her best
                                                                              but not my best
                                                                                what was best?
I am angry because I can see the Black in me
I can't feel the Black in me
and to think that one time
I took pride in not sounding Black
now my heart bleeds to be free of this
                                                                                    White façade
                                                                                     all her faces
Will the real me stand up!
Stand up and be counted among the rest
                                                                 not set apart, labeled
                                                                                           for what
                                                                       My ego is not vain
                                                                                 only my pride
                                                                                but which one
                                                             the Black or the White?
my heart cries out to my many
                                                                    brothers and sisters
who were forced in their ignorance
                                                                 to become somebody
                                                                                           but who
We are not White or are we?
We look Black, we sound white
                                                                                            we look
out of Black faces through white perspectives
Somewhere deep in our souls we find the rhythm
                                                                       We hear the drum
                                                                 We rock on the beat
                                                           Yet something is missing
Something that doesn't allow us to fit
                                                                               Black or white
so who the hell are we?
                                                                         help us… we hurt

Join an intentional community of people

Be an Advocate for Friendship In the Midst of Diversity!

Introduction

Racial reconciliation, racial harmony, racial justice, diversity training, and cultural sensitivity are words used to describe our awareness or lack of awareness of the reality of racial prejudice and institutional racism. There are secular and religious organizations, individuals, and denominations fighting for racial equality.  But here is the question I would like to propose: Are we gaining greater understanding and greater acceptance, or are we more confused and more powerless?  My quest is to join with you to explore a pathway for real change. Many race initiatives expose white privilege, internal racial oppression, and institutional racism very well. Some walk away racially aware and emotionally abused.  I am envisioning a “next step” to diversity trainings that will motivate and inspire us to step to the front line of the battlefield. I believe that the sharing of our stories will tap into the spiritual strength within each one of us and will teach us how to be willing participants to promote unity in the midst of diversity between individuals and communities.

Who Am I?

There were once abolitionists and segregationists, perhaps de-segregationists and, heaven forbid, even racists. I am an integrationist! I am African American, over 50, and a “sold out” believer in the indwelling spiritual power of Jesus Christ. I seek to gather together and to help integrate individuals of different ethnic, cultural, socio-economic environments, and faith beliefs into a circle of safe dialogue for the purpose of developing multiracial friendships, mutual learning, and reconciliation healing and hope. The essence of being an integrationist is persistence, perseverance, and presence.

I am advocating that a movement towards the development of intentional friendships across culture, race, and religion is necessary for reconciliation to begin. Our impetus for change comes from a repentant heart. I choose to believe that we can “undo racism” because racism is learned, and it can be unlearned. As a committed integrationist, I envision a Hearts In Harmony reciprocal community that sees racial and ethnic diversity as central to its existence.

I envision a community that seeks to develop faithful leaders of all peoples and are committed to a cross-cultural covenant that transcends and transforms personal preference. It will be our collaborative effort that enables us to effectively address social and racial injustice.

We are FAT: Faithful, Available, and Teachable.  The birthing of this intentional movement towards change is nourished through trust and ongoing dialogue across the boundaries of socio-economics, disability, religion, gender, culture, and race. This movement towards change I boldly claim as: Operation Koinonia.

Friendship in The Midst of Diversity

This movement is defined by a community of people who are intentionally working towards developing authentic, reconciling dialogue that seeks to proclaim life together through honesty, humility, confession, forgiveness, concern, restoration, accountability, availability, acceptance, and love.

Multiethnic/Multicultural Reciprocal Partnerships

--Be an advocate for Unity In Diversity--

Developing Hearts In Harmony Reciprocal Partners provides the tool kit that can equip you with skills and knowledge to communicate across culture and race & disability effectively. These tools are designed to equip and empower each partner to become educated in issues of cultural diversity and reconciliation. The objective of this movement is to nurture and facilitate the necessary confidence in each partner to become an advocate for change around the dinner table, in our schools, our workplace and throughout our community.

Partnerships aim to form pathways toward awareness and healing – one friend at a time

  • Two people of diverse ethnic, or educational, or socio-economic and faith backgrounds or physical ability are invited to pair together and commit to meet once a month for 6 months to dialogue about community, friendship, culture, racial identity and social justice.
  • Hearts In Harmony Reciprocal Partners are encouraged to meet together for coffee or a meal each month at alternate public locations.

Partners are provided a set of questions to guide mutual conversations, such as:

  • What is your family of origin, educational background, faith journey, etc.?
  • When did you first realize there were people of other cultures and abilities?
  • Do you choose your words more carefully when you’re with a person of another culture or physical ability?
  • What do you hope to gain from a friendship with someone different from yourself?

Partners are especially invited to attend quarterly fellowship gatherings to network, share a meal, watch a film, share experiences and build community.

We are waiting for you…

Now these are definitely three sisters ... Hearts In Harmony. Thats the Rev. Denise Posie on the left and the Rev. Shiela Holmes on my right. Rev. Shiela serves in Patterson, New Jersey. Proud Sisters in the Christian Reformed Church. (note that Rev. Posie is not at a church at this time. She served Immanuel CRC in Kalamazoo for 12 years).
Photo: Some of my white folk brothers and sisters often want to know action steps to begin reconciliation... This woman did exactly what is necessary. Meet Nancy Dorner. She is a speaker and Christian author. she inspired me. she empowered me by opening doors of opportunity for me to write and speak. I was her manicurist back in the DAY. Won't say how many days ago
Okay... I would like you to meet Nancy Dorner! My friend and mentor who inspired me to write my first collection of poetry.. "RAW SPIRIT" and who also managed a speaking gig for me that some folk would have never believed would have come to pass. Nancy is a published author and an inspirational speaker who is still writing books!!! Praise the Lord my sister!
Check out my girl Tracy! She is a real Hearts In Harmony
Partner. She and I intentionally developed an intercultural friendship with the curriculum that I developed. We met once a month for 6 months mutually sharing answers to tough questions about culture and race and we grew to care deeply for one another. We are FRINGE Friends. I will introduce you to more later.
